New York: Eldred, Barryville, the Delaware River

More Photos of Aida Austin

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Aida Austin was my Grandpa Mort Austin’s sister, and my great aunt. Aida is the one that wrote the 1881 Diary I’ve posted on the right hand side of this site. She apparently developed some of her own photos, although some of the photos here are actually postcards.

My mom loaned me her photo album which I have scanned and I thought some of you would be interested in viewing the photos of the area that she had. I have posted most of the ones from the area and here are a few more.

Delaware River, I think.

This was kind of random: A photo of Harriet Beecher Stowe and her brother, Henry Ward Beecher.

The Congregational Church of Eldred, NY

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

This is the Congregational Church of Eldred, NY.

Felix Kyte was the pastor of this Congregational church at one time. My great grandfather, James Eldred attended the church. Felix performed the wedding ceremony for my Leavenworth Great Grandparents, Sherman S. Leavenworth and Maria Myers; For my Austin Great Grandparents William Henry Austin and his wife, Mary Ann Eldred. Felix also officiated at the wedding of William Henry’s brother, Alonzo who married Mary Ann’s half-sister, Phebe Eldred. Phebe and Mary Ann were both daughters of James Eldred.

The Hawk’s Nest

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

The road to and from Port Jervis to either Eldred or Barryville is a gorgeous drive known to my mom, who travelled it during her growing up days, as the Hawk’s Nest. We didn’t have time to see the Eagles in the area, but you can see the map and other information on this site: http://www.eagleinstitute.org/
